Operational Services

Fire suppression:  Use of fire apparatus, and firefighting equipment to safely manage and efficiently extinguish all types of fire scenarios.
Haz-Mat: Operations level mitigation of hazardous material incidents.  All firefighters trained to operations level.
Water/Ice rescue: We train seasonally for Cold-water immersion and Ice Rescue scenarios using the specialized cold environment equipment.
Trench rescue: Another seasonal training scenario using specifically designed tools to retrieve victims from a trench or hole cave-in situation.
Confined space rescue: Confined spaces can be defined any space or area that limits or restricts entry or egress such as culverts, storm sewers, tanks, silos, etc.
Off-Road rescue: Utilizing the department’s UTV and off-road rescue trailer we can reach victims injured from farm accidents, tree-stand falls, snowmobile or ATV accidents which may occur well off paved access roads.
Search and Rescue: Locating missing and lost people in structures or open areas.
Vehicle Extrication: Use of “Jaws of Life” and other hydraulic equipment to extricate persons trapped in vehicles that have been involved in serious crashes.
Fire Inspections: Conduct bi-annual inspection of all commercial and industrial buildings to ensure compliance with the state and local fire codes.
Fire Investigation: Investigate cause and origin of all accidental and suspicious fires.
Airport Operations: We assist the Appleton International Airport Fire Department with all aircraft related emergencies, fire suppression and rescue activities.
Public Education:  Fire safety and prevention presentations for school-aged children and appearances for community special events.
Mutual Aid:  Through mutual aid agreements with the towns surrounding Greenville, we respond to other these other communities to help out with equipment and personnel in the event of a large fire or incident.  We often train with our neighboring departments to familiarize ourselves with their equipment and operations.
Emergency Medical Service: The First Responders respond to all medical emergencies within the town providing initial first aid and patient stabilization prior to more advanced medical care arriving on scene.

 

Organizational Structure & Responsibilities

As with any fire department, the personnel and resources must be organized in an ordered framework that will enable optimal command, control and the efficient performance of duties.
The Greenville Fire Department organizational structure is a headed up by the Fire Chief who is appointed by the Town Board.  The Fire Chief then appoints all other subordinate officers that report to him.  Within Greenville’s structure we have (1) Fire Chief, (2) Deputy Chiefs, (5) Fire Captains, (1) EMS Coordinator and (5) Lieutenants.  Included with these positions are a Safety Officer and a Training Officer.
Description of basic duties within the fire department:
Fire Chief – Overall responsibility and supervision for all fire suppression, rescue, fire prevention and public education activities. Performs administrative duties, enforces fire codes, establishes department standards and develops policies and long range plans in accordance with state and local statutes.
Deputy Fire Chief – Works under general supervision of the Fire Chief.  The Deputy Chief assists the Fire Chief in the administrative functions of planning, organizing, coordinating and control of department operations and personnel.  The Deputy Chief acts as Chief Officer in the Fire Chief’s absence.
Captain (Fire) – Works in a lead role in the training of department personnel in driving and operation of pumping apparatus and related engine company equipment.  Act as incident command until relieved by higher ranking officer.
EMS Coordinator – Responsible for coordination and training of EMS-First Responder personnel.
Lieutenant - Coordinates actions of a fire or rescue team during emergency situations and assists with emergency situations.  Ensures maintenance and training standards are met and helps develop personnel.

Safety Officer – Develops and implements safety programs and has the responsibility to identify and recommend corrections of health and safety standards.  Safety officer has the authority to terminate, suspend or alter activities on an emergency scene that they judge creates an unsafe or imminent hazard to personnel.
Training Officer – Responsibilities include the planning, scheduling and implementing new and existing training programs to continually update department personnel on firefighting techniques and procedures.
Fire Investigator(s) – Members work as a part of a supervisory committee or team that is responsible for finding the basic cause and origin of fires and the preservation of scene evidence. 
Firefighters – Perform fire suppression/extinguishment and rescue operations while protecting lives and preserving property.  Also does work in public fire safety education and prevention programs.

EMS First Responders – Members respond to medical emergencies ranging from sickness to trauma incidents providing initial first aid and stabilization prior to ambulance transport.
